Rhyming books are great fun for children and parents alike. Perhaps less obvious are the great benefits that rhymes can offer to literacy and reading skills. A number of studies confirm this benefit and indicate that knowledge of rhymes help children progress in reading once they start school.
Rhyming helps younger children pay attention to the sounds that words actually make, and in turn, groups of letters and how these form sounds. The more they read a rhyming book they will begin to recognise words, common sounds and common letters. They will recognize for example that words like cat and sat both end with – at. By making children aware that words share segments of sounds will have future benefit when learning to spell words that sound alike. Makes perfect sense right!
Reading nursery rhymes is a great start on the road to help young learners through genuine, play-based, fun learning.
My Given Name have also added the child’s own name to poems and rhymes to make it truly personal to the little one. We hope these will encourage a future love of books and of reading in general.
